Balandra and La Paz in one day: the perfect day trip from Cabo
Turquoise shallows, the famous mushroom rock and sunset on the malecón.
Balandra is the kind of beach that looks edited even when it isn’t: shallow turquoise water you can wade across, white sand and red desert hills all around. It sits just outside La Paz, the capital of Baja California Sur, and it makes one of the best day trips from Los Cabos.
Balandra is the kind of beach that looks edited even when it isn’t.
The trick to enjoying it is simple: leave early. La Paz is about two hours from Cabo San Lucas, and Balandra is roughly 30 minutes past the city. If you are on the road at first light, you arrive with the water still calm, the light soft on the hills and the beach almost to yourself. By late morning the parking lot fills up, the breeze picks up and the colors start to flatten under the midday sun.
A protected bay, with rules worth knowing
Balandra is a protected natural area, and to keep it that way the number of visitors per day is limited. Access works in morning and afternoon time slots, with an entry fee managed by Mexico’s protected areas agency. The rules have changed several times in recent years, so check the current hours and fee the day before you go. There is very little shade and no restaurants on the beach itself, which means you should bring your own water, snacks, sunscreen and an umbrella, and take everything back out with you.
Walking across the sea to El Hongo
What makes Balandra different from any other beach in Baja is how shallow it is. You can walk a long way from shore with the water barely at your knees, crossing sandbars and channels that change with the tide. Follow the curve of the bay and you reach El Hongo, the mushroom-shaped rock carved by wind and waves that has become the symbol of La Paz. It is the classic photo, but take a moment to look back toward the mangroves and the hills, too: it is one of the most peaceful views in the region.
Lunch at Tecolote and a slower afternoon
When you are ready to eat, Tecolote Beach is just a few minutes away. It has a row of beachfront restaurants with fresh fish, cold drinks and a view of Espíritu Santo Island across the channel. Tecolote is also your plan B: if Balandra has already reached its limit for the day, you can spend the morning here instead and still have a beautiful beach day.
In the afternoon, head back into the city and walk the malecón, the waterfront promenade of La Paz. It is lined with sculptures, cafés and ice cream shops, and it feels nothing like the busier streets of Cabo. Stay for sunset if you can. The sun drops straight into the bay, and it is one of the best endings to a day anywhere in Baja.
Getting there and back
If you have the energy, the way home can include a stop in Todos Santos, the small Pueblo Mágico on the Pacific side, for a coffee or a stroll through its galleries. Either way, it is a long day behind the wheel, and most of the drive back is in the dark. With our Open Service you get a private vehicle and driver by the hour (four-hour minimum), so you can stop wherever you like, leave the timing to us and nap on the way home.
